Nirvana

One of the main influences of The Vines music is the grunge band Nirvana. Nirvana were formed in the late 80s in Aberdeen Washington. They were part of the Seattle grunge/punk movement, and are famous for popularising this music and being the most successful band in this genre. Nirvana consisted of Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals), Krist Novoselic (bass guitar) and Dave Grohl (drums). Nirvana were launched to popularity with their 1991 album Nevermind. Nevermind appealed to fans of heavier music with its heavy punk riffs, but gained radio airplay due to Kurt Cobains pop influenced melodies. This combination lead to Nirvana being the biggest band in the world. The follow up album to Nevermind was In Utero. This album challenged fans of Nirvana as it had a heavier darker sound than Nevermind. Kurt Cobain was never comfortable with the sucess of Nirvana. He also suffered from severe depression and herion addiction. This resulted in him commiting suicide in 1994, not long after the release of In Utero. The Vines draw influence from Nirvana because of Nirvanas heavy punk sound and commerially acceptable melodies. The Vines are often compared to Nirvana by the press.
